Throw a sporty summer party

As we hit the school holidays and the weather (hopefully) continues to improve, it seems a missed opportunity not to tap into the good vibes created by the summer of sport and use it as a backdrop for your barbecue or garden party.

With the emphasis on fun and not on competition – we know how easily a family party can descend into all-out war when Uncle Brian gets involved – here’s everything you need to create a perfectly harmonoius sport-themed party.

Sporting types of all ages need feeding so refreshments for should have an element of fun. Dress the table with a bright tablecloth, crack open the fun paper plates and picnicware, and fill the table with crowd-pleasers. Get into the spirit with some competitive baking among friends or find a games theme for your table – bagel hoop-la anyone?

Age is just a number when it comes to competition so arrange games to suit everyone from grandma to toddlers. They can all be a winner at something so stock up on ribbons at the haberdashery to make your own medals and rosettes. Supplement traditional favourite events like the egg and spoon race with tongue twisters, memory games and some great outdoor game packs. Who knows what new talents might be discovered?

When temperatures start to soar, head for the summer coolers. Paddling pools and water slides can be a big hit – little ones can run around and splash about as much as they like outdoors. Just have a good stack of towels ready for drying off. 

The British weather can be temperamental so provide cover for your outdoor seating with parasols to deal with summer showers, blistering heat or both.

Set up your own arena outdoors. A screen and projector will deliver the big wins for all to see. Get comfy with bean bags, outdoor lighting and a cool box filled with chilled refreshments then gather together and cheer with all your might.
